How to Get Started as a Surgery Center Volunteer

As one of the last remaining free clinics in California—and home to the nation’s first free surgery center—we rely entirely on the generosity and dedication of volunteers like you. Your time, expertise, and compassion make it possible to deliver life-changing surgical care to uninsured patients who might otherwise go without. Together, we are restoring health, dignity, and hope—one patient at a time.

Follow these steps to complete the volunteer onboarding process:

1. Complete the Online Application
Fill out the above Volunteer Application and download the full Volunteer Packet, which includes a checklist of required documentation.

Please note:

  • The General Volunteer Packet is intended for non-provider roles (e.g., nurses, surgical techs, admin support, etc.).

  • The Provider Volunteer Packet is required for licensed medical professionals, including MDs, Anesthesiologists, PAs, and NPs.

2. Gather Your Paperwork
Once you’ve reviewed the packet, prepare the necessary documents. Completed forms and required materials can be submitted in one of two ways:
Email – Send scanned copies to charrison@lestonnacfreeclinic.org
In Person – Bring your packet to a Surgery Center Open House

3. Attend a Surgery Center Open House
All prospective volunteers are required to attend a Surgery Center Open House/Orientation on the last Wednesday of each month at 6 PM. During the Open House, you will:
• Submit or finalize your paperwork
• Tour the facility
• Meet fellow volunteers and staff
• Receive your photo ID badge
• Receive a small welcome gift bag as our thanks!

4. You're Ready to Make a Difference!
Once your application, paperwork and orientation are complete, you'll be matched to a volunteer opportunity that fits your skills and schedule.
